I Remember When……
After returning from WWII in 1945, brothers Harry and Hap Wear went into business together. They purchased a store where Chalkville Small Engine Service is now from Berley Self (Kat Mobley’s father). The store sold fresh fruits like apples and bananas for 5 cents a pound. They weighed their vegetables like butterbeans and  potatoes. There was fresh bread, and they cut their own meats.
Many stories were told and conversations took place around the old coal stove in the back of the store. The front had two gas pumps where the brothers pumped gas for you unlike today where you serve yourself. My sister-in-law, Lula Wear, and I wanted to help with the store, but we were told to stay home and raise the children - that the men would handle the store.
