Clay’s champions are not all on the ballfield, according to Clay resident, James "Bo" Walter.  Walter’s son, Joseph (2004 picture to the left), has been winning a personal battle since birth.  Joseph Walter was diagnosed at age 18 months with a rare glycogen storage disorder, known as Pompe disease.  Many who have this disease do not reach their first birthday.  Joseph, a typical boy in many ways – with his schoolwork and Playstation – celebrated his 9th birthday on Monday, January 12, 2004, while on life support at his home.

Pompe disease, with infantile onset, is caused by a complete lack of an enzyme, called acid maltase, responsible for converting glycogen to glucose. If this enzyme doesn't work properly, glycogen builds up in the body's cells and leads to severe muscle damage, which affects the heart, skeletal, and respiratory muscles.

Clay Soccer Club hosted the Vitesse Soccer Camp during the first week of August. Vitesse is based out of Gray, Tennessee and operated by Michael Louter (pictured), michael-001.jpga native of Holland and a former Dutch League Soccer Player with the club AZ Alkmaar. The camp had participants from Clay’s U-10, U-12, U-13, U-14 and U-16 players.

“We did not have much time to put this camp together with the Clay Soccer program, but I would say that we had an overall successful week,” said U-13 head coach Bill Knapp. “We had to hold the camp this week due to the start of school and the fact that many of our players were on vacation right up the start of camp.”
