BMX Track May Come to Clay

Robert Wiginton made a presentation to the City of Clay Park and Recreation Board in May proposing a  bicycle racing track be constructed at the Clay City Park. Wiginton returned to the board in August to look at possible sites on the park property. Two to five acres will be needed for the track, plus space for spectators.

Wiginton said that possibly Oak Mountain track races may move to Clay because the State of Alabama has not been helping them lately, even though the state makes money on fees as people enter the park.

New Alterations Store

Dang's Alterations is now in Chalkville. Like Phil Rose's Shoes, which moved to Chalkville over a month ago, Dang's left Huffman because the Birmingham City School system is purchasing the property where the store was located. 

Nga Nguyen, owner of the shop, said she has been doing alterations for years, including back when she was in Vietnam. 

The family-run operation offers quick turn around without an additional fee.

 
Counseling Center Coming to Clay

Work is now being done to the  space trussvilleutilities.gifnext to Nationwide at the intersection of Old Springville Road and Deerfoot Parkway to prepare for a new counseling center.

Susan Toole, a program director with Family Bridges, said Clay was chosen because of the higher number of families with both parents working and single-parent families as revealed in a demographics study. These people may find it difficult to travel to Birmingham where similar services are offered.

The goal of Family Bridges, Toole said, is to provide the needed assistance to families before they enter the court system. The services include parenting classes and social worker in-home visits to assist in family communication. Toole hopes churches and schools in the area can also provide some suggestions of what type of services are needed in the community. Toole is hoping a group of volunteers will help by providing transportation to those who need it.

One of the major needs a focus group study showed that is needed in the area is a youth grief counseling support group, Toole said.
